It follows the protagonist Mare Barrow, a seemingly common girl who is endowed with the power to control lightning, as she escapes the clutches of King Maven, a former prince and friend who betrayed her in the first novel. The second installment in a series called Red Queen, it continues the series’ central conflict between a burgeoning army of rebels and a nepotistic kingdom which segregates its people by family lineage.
